Storytelling piece: "Recovering Music Snob"
Delivered for a Tellin' Tales Theatre show this week
My name is Josh and I’m a recovering music snob.
As a kid, I got pleasure out of correcting others, including teachers. I acted like I was better than others to cope with abuse I got for being autistic, gay, and mentally ill. I also used multiple addictions to numb pain.
I longed for friendships so that I could feel less alone in the world. This posed a dilemma: I could keep needing to be right and repelling people, or I could work on such issues and find real security in a community. Doing the latter choice proved more difficult than you would think–a lot more difficult.
